Myopia (Short-Sightedness) Is on the Rise

Myopia makes it difficult to see objects clearly at a distance. It most commonly begins between the ages of 6 and 13 and can worsen over time. It often runs in families.

Vision can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses—but we can now do more than correct it.

Myopia management aims to slow progression and may include:

  • Specialised glasses or contact lenses

  • Eye drops

  • Lifestyle changes

Lifestyle and Behavioural Tips

  • Boost Outdoor Time: Encourage at least 1.5 to 2 hours of outdoor activity daily to help prevent the onset and progression of myopia.

  • The 20-20-20 Rule: Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away.

  • Manage Screen Time: Limit non-academic screen use.

  • Proper Viewing Habits: Keep books and screens at least 12 inches (30 cm) away from the eyes.

  • Routine Eye Checks: Schedule regular eye examinations.

Early action can help protect long-term eye health.
